Late saturday night i returned from a dinner party at 2.45 am only to find myself unable to enter my own home.
It it wasnt for the fact that i had met the music directors of Chintuji last night at a dinner party-its a film i would not have even heard of. But today being a bored afternoon, on the suggestions of a friend, i headed to the theatre with her. More for the popcorn samosa and icecream than the movie actually.
What has touched me the most in the last few days -ever since the false accusation in the child labour case -is the immense support i have received from my family friends and neighbours and everybody else.
I remember many years ago, while still in my teens-I had gone to meet a very sucessful producer regarding a film role at a plush suburban hotel at around 4 pm. He was an out of towner – so was staying in that hotel-so the model co ordinator had told me. They were looking for a new face to launch. These meetings were something that made me very uncomfortable- but part of the business of breaking into bolllywood I was told so i quelled my nervousness, put on my best smile and went.
As soon as the news broke that the Maharastra Government had filed a case against me for abusing child labour laws-after i had got over my shock and vehemently denied it and when i had calmed down- I requested a meeting with the State Labour Minister Nawab Mallik. Obviously. This wasnt some cheap affair or filmy scandal that i was embroiled in-The State Government accusing me of commiting a legal offense was a very serious thing for me. No way was i going to allow something like this to happen. No way.
I was having lunch with a girlfriend when i got a few calls from journos and friends telling me I am on TV-breaking news. Suchitra Krishnamoorthi accused of employing a girl below 14-abusing child labour laws! To say i am shocked and hurt is putting it mildly-I am devastated
So its a pity that an actor of the repute and international stature of Shahrukh Khan got hauled up and questioned by US immigration. The media has suddenly got a focus other than the Swine flu pandemic and a big hue and cry is being made about it-so much so that theaters and schools are re opening in spite of no concrete medical evidence that the pandemic has been contained and that our children are now safe.
My daughter Kaveri came to me the other day and asked me why her little friend lies so much. I asked her the usual mandatory questions a mother asks-“like how do you know she’s not telling the truth? And “maybe she was scared of telling the truth because other children may laugh at her?” “did you cross check with anybody that what she was telling was a lie” “maybe it did happen but nobody else saw it” etc etc. But she explained very lucidly to me “no mama-she lies for everything and to everybody. Her brother dosent tell lies then why does she?–She even swears on her mamma that she is not lying when even her mamma keeps telling her not to lie. It’s just a habit with her”
Why are weather forecasts in India/Mumbai so pathetically off the mark? Apparently (this is authentic gossip and though i have no legal way or means of verifying it me thinks it may be true) the Met department of India has up to date, state of the art weather prediction equipment that equals the best in the world that the governement has spent a fortune and a half on very very recenly-as late as after the July 2005 floods- but have just been too lazy to install.
This is a heartfelt apology to Pooja Bedi for the things i wrote about her in my blog “Double standards galore. I had no right to drag her name in & i admit it was rude inconsiderate and unnecessary-especially towards someone who I have known half my life and have considered a friend
