Many many many years ago my director Kundan Shah whilst shooting for the film Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naan was trying to get me to shed tears for an emotional scene. For those familiar with the film, it was the woh tho hai albela song… In spite of the glycerin & all the other co-ercing gyaan I remained dry eyed. Petulant. Furious even. Refusing to cry. I wanted to go home.
Goa( where we were shooting & most of the film was shot) was too tooooo hot- my accomodation during the shooting of the film was worse than the servants quarters in my home where i grew up & i told Kundan i want to go home, & that I cant possibly forgive his cheapness by denying me a coca cola on a dry hot summer day. & that I didnt give a shit about any of this anymore. All the coca cola’s offered to me immediately subsequently smashed aside…
And then suddenly Kundan Shah smiled very sweetly at me & said “Imagine if one of your sisters died Suchitra- how would you feel. If you know you could never see them or talk to them again…
And as if on tap, the dam burst. The tears flowed and flowed and flowed. Such a flood that Kundan came & whispered in my ear” its pack up for you Suchitra. Thank you. It was a great shot”
Dunno why i thought of that today … :-)))
& for those whose names I’ve I’ve omitted….
Needed to save something for my next post so… :-)))
