The “D” word

Its permeated our psyche for almost two decades now -the “D” word. Its Diabolocal, Dreadful, Dodgy, Detestible but De rigueur almost -Where there’s big bucks, big politics, big crime-the D word invariably crops up -albeit hush hush.  Its the biggest “Dhong’ in our “Desh”.

The “Dichotomy’ for the commonman ‘Dumbfounding’

There was a time when film stars and the whos who flaunted their association with “D” -danced at the many lavish parties in Dubai . posed for happy shining photographs. That was till the Bombay blasts in 1993. Then the government started to crack down on those associated with “D” -some people got arrested for flaunting their association, some others dropped dead like flies.

Filmmakers like Ram Gopal Varma & thereafter any gangster genre copycat fascinated audiences with the many stories on the D company that they churned out. Gundas and criminals became heroes.

The filmmakers say their  knowledge of the inner workings of the crime syndicate  came from what they read and see in the media. Really now…seriously? D day the Nikhil Advani directed movie with Rishi Kapoor playing and bearing an uncanny resemble to the don- the only cinematic attempt that imagined catching & eliminating the warlord died a dreary death at the box office. A total mission impossible in the eyes of a fatalisic public. Jingoism has its limits no- how can the D man ever be captured?

When the Government claims they cant get hold of the man – and yet family weddings get national and international prime time on TV.  His homes in Dubai and Karachi are almost tourist attractions

26/11 happens – the D word comes up again.
Any large business scam involving billions of dollars the D word comes up yet once more-whether pertaining to land, telecom cricket etc

Once again people are taken into custody, questioned, arrested, blah blah. The Indian government, the CBI, CIA  and Interpol and anybody with legit authority  crack down on everybody with even a remote association with the “D” word

Over the years the ‘D’ drill has remained unchanged. Blame avoid & look the other way.  Dawood is a shoe company- yeah right! Life goes on in India. Some more big buck scams, some more terrorist attacks some more  & then  some more dodgy dancing from Delhi to Dubai

And now its finally starting to emerge in the media that Dawood roams free because he enjoys the highest political patronage.

I mean seriously- is the public or the media so D for dumb that they didnt already know this?  What stopped them from speaking up earlier and what prompts this expose now?

Could it be the changes taking place in D for Delhi?

  1. Congratulation for a very well written blog.
Dowood and Tiger Memon over the years have symbolized, whatever is wrong with our criminal justice system and a week foreign policy. Indian govt has failed to acquire the properties of Dawood in Bombay, let alone arresting him. His properties are being openly enjoyed by his leftover clan in Bombay. A country of more than a billion is so helpless in front of a a criminal terrorist.
    God Bless India.

  2. ‘D’as in Democracy stands endangered under polity patronising ‘D’ the gang.
….if I recall right…..once pre-NDA, when the then Defense Minister was questioned about a D-gang man having been spotted travelling in the Minister’s helicopter, his reply was curt: “no idea who all in his entourage, don’t keep track “. And media obliged, issue was hushed. This was then a small news item in, if not mistaken in Times Of India…???? Any body got the cutting, please share ( i have misplaced my archives while shifting)?
